Born in Palestine, Najwa's early years were shaped by the rich tapestry of her homeland's culture and traditions. Her academic journey commenced with a focus on Biological Sciences at Abu Dies University, Palestine, further enriched by courses at a local community college in Chicago. However, Najwa’s migration to Chicago 28 years ago redefined her trajectory where she embarked on a transformative journey that caused her pursuit to transition into a broader exploration of social issues and community advocacy.
Najwa Abuali’s passion for community service and her desire to create lasting change led her to serve as the Executive Director at the Middle Eastern North African (MENA) Community Center, a nonprofit organization committed to providing essential social services. Najwa leverages her expertise in analyzing educational, cultural, social, and demographic data to tailor programs and initiatives that address the specific needs of the MENA community and beyond. Her dedication to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment has made the center a beacon of hope for individuals and families seeking support and empowerment.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Najwa remains deeply rooted in her cultural heritage, actively engaging in initiatives that celebrate and preserve the rich traditions of the MENA region. Her commitment to bridging cultural divides and fostering understanding underscores her belief in the power of community to create positive change.
Veronica Sanchez was born in Mexico City but has been residing in Chicago for 54 years. She recently retired after working with Peoples Gas for 31 years. She worked in Human Resources in the Training and Development area. She facilitated New Employee Orientations, created online training programs, and later was an HR Coordinator. Veronica has very strong community ties through her church in the Edgewater Community. She has been involved in leading and supporting the Women's Ministry. She has been a leader and teacher of the youth in her church. Her desire is to build strong relationships in Jefferson Park and surrounding communities to support the MENA Community Center outreach programs and initiatives.Veronica is currently enrolled in Logos University to get a BA degree in Biblical Counseling.
Amal Asfur is a mother of five, and brings over 25 years of financial experience to the table, including expertise in the banking sector and as a licensed insurance and real estate agent.
Dedicated to assisting individuals with navigating complex paperwork and unfamiliar processes, she understands the challenges many encounter in these areas. Her accumulated wealth of knowledge is intended to serve as a resource for those who may be less familiar with certain financial aspects.
In her role as Financial Manager, Amal's goal is to enhance the fiscal well-being of the organization and to provide support and resources to community members to improve their financial literacy.
Shakira Abuali is a Palestinian-American residing in the Northside of Chicago. With a passion for community engagement and cultural diversity, Shakira leverages her connections in the Northside to foster outreach initiatives and organize culturally sensitive events for all minorities. She recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in Integrative Neuroscience from DePaul University, and currently works as a dental assistant.
Shakira has a strong background in biomedical research and holds certifications in the field. In her free time, she enjoys baking and enhancing her event decorating skills. Shakira aspires to continue her involvement in neuroscience research while preparing to apply to dental school. Through her professional and community efforts, she is committed to making a positive impact, combining her dedication to science, education, and cultural inclusivity.
Nellie Ghosheh, a Palestinian-American residing in a small suburb near Chicago, recently graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She double majored in Psychology and Government, along with obtaining a writing certificate. Outside of her academic pursuits, Nellie finds joy in playing badminton and expressing her creativity through writing.
Looking ahead, Nellie will begin law school this fall, aspiring to work on laws that positively impact Muslims. She is a very community-oriented person, and during her college years, she devoted herself to advancing research within the Muslim and MENA community. She looks forward to contributing her skills to an organization that aligns with her commitment to the MENA community.
